High court to ComedK: Redo post-graduate dental counselling

The Times of India (TOI)
May 27, 2012
BANGALORE: The Karnataka high court on Friday directed the ComedK to hold fresh counselling for P-G dental courses.
Dentist Dr Riya Mariam Raju and fellow dentists had filed a petition in the court, saying the ComedK (Consortium of Medical, Engineering and Dental Colleges ? Karnataka) barred them from attending counselling on the ground that they had not brought demand drafts from nationalized banks and a few had not brought the original counterfoil.
Admitting the petition, Justice Ashok B Hinchigeri said, ?The system owes a duty to honour preferences of meritorious students. Even the apex court had, in umpteen judgments, said admissions should be merit-based.??
Stating that the petitioners figured in the top 600 ranks, the judge said banks? failure to affix seals or signatures on the counterfoils cannot be held against the students. He further said the advocates who appeared before the court could not say whether Karur Vysya Bank was nationalized. So the students cannot be faulted for not recognizing banks ? nationalized or not.
Authorities were unaware that Bank of Maharashtra was nationalized. One of the candidates had split the fee into six DDs: five from Vijaya Bank and one from Karnataka Bank.

IIT-Bombay to Establish Campus in New York City

IIT-Bombay to Establish Campus in New York City
Mumbai: The Indian Institute of Technology-Bombay (IIT-Bombay), Mumbai, is likely to set up a new campus in Brooklyn, New York City. Reportedly, IIT-Bombay will establish the Centre for Urban Science and Progress (CUSP), along with five other universities. New York will be the laboratory as the six institutes (universities) develop resolutions for regenerating the city’s infrastructure, buildings and services, dating back to the 17th century.

The consortium will comprise IIT-Bombay; New York University (NYU); City University, NY; Warwick University, UK; Toronto University; and Carnegie Mellon. It will set up an applied science institute offering a full-time masters programme, executive programmes and PhD, all in the areas of urban science.

As per sources, New York City Economic Development Corporation (NYCEDC) had invited universities from around the world to come to NY to fuel research for existing industries and declared CUSP as a second runner-up out of all the entries it received, recently. However, the Cornell / Technion Consortium, was the winner and will set up a campus on Roosevelt Island.

While discussing about the Institute’s new achievement, Devang Khakhar, IIT-B Director, said that the centre presents a new opportunity to address the challenges of mega cities. In addition, the work of the to-be-formed centre will also provide a template to address issues of mega cities in general, he concluded.

DU To Imply Equal Weightage for Trials and Certificates Under Sports Quota

DU To Imply Equal Weightage for Trials and Certificates Under Sports Quota
New Delhi:Delhi University (DU), Delhi, has decided to implement equal weightage for trials and certificates, for admissions under sports quota from this year onwards. Therefore, from this year, DU aspirants who want to take admission under the sports quota will have to work more on their performance.

According to a University official, from this year, the quota policy will go for a 50-50 distribution of marks. The trials will be organized by colleges themselves as they need to select students on the basis of the team they need. Earlier, DU had changed its policy for sports quota admission in 2010 and decided to give 75% weightage to certificates and only 25% to trials.

In the same context, Dinesh Singh, Vice Chancellor, Delhi University, said that since there was a lot of confusion in the sports trials held for the last two years; this year, colleges will conduct their own trials. However, the same will be monitored by university representatives.

Moreover, DU has also decentralized admissions under the sports category. The step has been taken to improve the selection process, as last year, trials under the category were chaotic due to unclear guidelines and weighing criteria. The norms for admission under the extra-curricular activities, however, are still not concrete.
